Monday & Thursday

In the Name of Allah The most Gracious The Most Merciful

The fasting of Monday and Thursday is one of the best voluntary deeds a Muslims can perform. There are several narrations by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) on why he used to perform the fast on those two days of the week and its virtues.

Abu Qatada Ansari (رضى الله عنه) reported that Allah’s Massenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It is (the day) when I was born and revelation was sent down to me. (Sahih Muslim)

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Deeds of people are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays. So I like that my actions be presented while I am fasting.”

Another virtue of those days is shown in the following Hadith that says:

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
“The gates of Paradise are opened on Monday and Thursday. In them, (will enter) whoever has not associated anything with Allah will be forgiven, except for the two who shun each other, (about whom) it is said: ‘Return these two until they make amends.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi)

It was narrated from Jubair bin Nufair that ‘Aishah (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا) said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to be keen to fast on Mondays and Thursday.” (Sunan an-Nasa`i, Hasan sahih)
