Question: What is the ruling on wearing sports clothes in which there are symbols belonging to the kuffar, such as sports jerseys on which there are symbols of Italy or Germany or America, or on which are written the names of some of the kaafir players.

Answer: Clothing on which there are symbols of the kuffaar is subject to further discussion, as follows:

1. If these symbols represent the religion of the kuffaar such as crosses and the like, in this case it is not permissible to import these clothes or to sell them or to wear them.

2. If these symbols represent veneration of anyone among the kuffaar, by putting his picture or writing his name and so on, they are also haraam as stated above.

3. If these slogans do not have to do with worship or veneration of any person, rather they are permissible trademarks, then there is nothing wrong with them.

And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and Companions.

Some scholars have stated as long as the person is wearing the shoes then it is permissible because you are stepping on the shoe. The reply to this would be that you are FUNDING the company and promoting their product and they are still BENEFITING from you buying their products. Did the prophet (‘Allaihis salat wassalam) wear sandals or any clothing that had the names of idols on it prove that point of stepping on their names?

Nike itself had made a shoe with the writing of Allah on it. So not only do they believe that their product is successful due to their brand being named after the greek goddess of victory but they insult Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala).
